Urban Barbarian

Every barbarian knows that city life can soften the spirit and the body, but some barbarians take on the trappings and ways of their adoptive homes and bend their savage powers to its challenges. While these urban barbarians’ rough edges are smoothed into civility, they can use their primal nature and upbringing to move with the ebb and flow of civilization’s natural rhythms.

Role: The Urban Barbarian's role in combat is to deal damage and take it via their Rage ability and natural armor bonuses. Most enemies are often lured to the barbarian due to their threatening presence on the battlefield. Urban Barbarians use their rage powers to make the most out of their time while enraged, absolutely destroying everything in their path. They are incredibly resilient to spells and physical damage making them the perfect tanks in any party.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the urban barbarian.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: An urban barbarian is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, and shields (except tower shields).

Crowd Control (Ex)

At 1st level, an urban barbarian gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC when adjacent to two or more enemies. In addition, her movement is not impeded by crowds, and she gains a bonus equal to 1/2 her urban barbarian level on Intimidate checks to influence crowds.

Controlled Rage (Ex)

When an urban barbarian rages, instead of making a normal rage action, she applies the bonus in one of the ways listed below:

  • +2 bonus to her melee attack rolls, melee damage rolls, thrown weapon damage rolls
  • +2 bonus to Reflex, and ranged attack rolls and CMD
  • +2 to fortitude and 2 temporary hit points per Hit Die These temporary hit points are lost first when a character takes damage, disappear when the rage ends, and are not replenished if the urban barbarian enters a rage again within 1 minute of her previous rage

This bonus increases to +3 when she gains greater rage and +4 when she gains mighty rage. She may apply the full bonus or may split the bonus between the listed ways in increments of +1. When using a controlled rage, an urban barbarian gains no bonus on Will saves, takes no penalties to AC, and can still use Intelligence-, Dexterity-, and Charisma-based skills.

An urban barbarian can end her rage as a free action, and is fatigued for 1 minute after a rage ends. An urban barbarian can't enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted, but can otherwise enter a rage multiple times per day. If an urban barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends. An urban barbarian can't begin a Rage in the same round that she ended one.

Rage Powers(Ex)

As an urban barbarian gains levels, she learns to use her rage in new ways. At 2nd level and every 2 levels thereafter, the urban barbarian gains a rage power. An urban barbarian gains the benefits of rage powers only while raging. Some of these powers are always active during a rage, and others require the urban barbarian to take an action to use them. Unless otherwise noted, an urban barbarian cannot select an individual power more than once.

Some of the following rage powers are stances. Activating a stance rage power is a move action. An urban barbarian can't have more than one stance rage power active at a time. If she activates a stance rage power while another one is active, the current stance immediately ends. The stance can be intentionally ended at the beginning of the urban barbarian's turn as a free action; otherwise, it lasts until the rage ends.

List of Rage Powers

Uncanny Dodge (Ex)

At 2nd level, an urban barbarian gains the ability to react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. She cannot be caught flat-footed, even if the attacker is invisible. She still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. An urban barbarian with this ability can still lose her Dexterity bonus to AC if an opponent successfully uses the feint action against her. If an urban barbarian already has uncanny dodge from a different class, she automatically gains Improved Uncanny Dodge (see below) instead.

Trap Sense (Ex)

At 3rd level, an urban barbarian gains a +1 bonus on Reflex saves made to avoid traps and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps. These bonuses increase by +1 every three urban barbarian levels thereafter (6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th level). Trap sense bonuses gained from multiple classes stack. This ability counts as trap sense for any feat or class prerequisite

Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex)

At 5th level, an urban barbarian can no longer be flanked. This defense denies enemies the ability to sneak attack the urban barbarian by flanking her, unless the attacker has at least 4 more levels in a class that provides sneak attack than the urban barbarian has barbarian levels. If a character already has uncanny dodge (see above) from another class, the levels from the classes that grant uncanny dodge stack to determine the minimum rogue level required to flank the character.

Does having Uncanny Dodge make you immune to feint maneuvers?
You can still fall victim to feint. "An urban barbarian with this ability can still lose her Dexterity bonus to Armor Class if an opponent successfully uses the feint action against her."

Damage Reduction (Ex)

At 7th level, an urban barbarian gains damage reduction. Subtract 1 from the damage the barbarian takes each time she is dealt damage from a weapon or a natural attack. At 10th level, and every three barbarian levels thereafter (13th, 16th, and 19th level), this damage reduction rises by 1 point. damage reduction can reduce damage to 0, but not below 0.

Greater Rage (Ex)

At 11th level, an urban barbarian's bonus rage increases to +3.In addition, the amount of temporary hit points gained when entering a rage increases to 3 per Hit Die.

Indomitable Will (Ex)

While in rage, an urban barbarian of 14th level or higher gains a +4 bonus on Will saves to resist enchantment spells. This bonus stacks with all other modifiers.

Tireless Rage (Ex)

At 17th level, an urban barbarian is no longer fatigued at the end of her rage. If she enters a rage again within 1 minute of ending a rage, she doesn't gain any temporary hit points from her rage.

Mighty Rage (Ex)

At 20th level, an urban barbarian's bonus +4. In addition, the amount of temporary hit points gained when entering a rage increases to 4 per Hit Die.

An urban barbarian who becomes lawful loses the ability to rage and cannot gain more levels as a barbarian. She retains all other benefits of the class.
